  • Flipping!

I don’t know that much about this band, but I stumbled across this video today.

As the truck continues to flip over and over the singer’s life flashes before his eyes. It is very creative by the way the cameras are constantly moving and hand-held. The rotating transitions are what really make this work well for me. And the effects are all done extremely well!

I’m sure there are some deep messages about life in this music video but the director and team that handled the effects, nailed it!

  • Apps!
Today I listened to part one from a four week Podcast series called Apps from Pastor Sam at Grand Rapids First Church. It’s crazy how something like mobile apps can take up so much of our time each day.  Pastor Sam brought up a simple math problem which you have probably heard before, reading the Bible for 12 minutes a day for 365 days, is the amount of time it will take to read the Bible from Genesis to Revelation. Occasionally I post and talk about TV shows and movies, but the 30 minutes or hour I have to watch TV each day is put into perspective when someone I look up to tells me only 12 minutes a day can help me read the Bible from cover to cover. But the amount of time I watch TV is very small compared to the time I spend using mobile apps. It’s a weird element to my everyday life, apps like CNN, ESPN or Angry Birds take up 4 times the amount of time it would take to follow Pastor Sam’s 12 minute plan of reading the Bible. Grand Rapids First just came out with a mobile app that has this very study guide, video and audio podcast on it, maybe that’s the solution.

  • Music with Visuals

The first time I watched this music video was in 2003 and it’s probably the most unforgettable music video I have ever watched. The song itself is a cover of “Hurt” by Nine Inch Nails performed by Johnny Cash on what would be his final record before his death.

One lesson I took from this music video is how powerful the imagery of fruits, flowers and food decayed on the table were, it is something that the director (Mark Romanek) used in a powerful way. The song has a very reflective and moving tone but when matched up with the imagery from Cash’s youth and the dusty broken down ‘House of Cash’, which had been closed for 30 years, really flows great with the lyrics.

Another lesson would be the use of older footage when the storyline allows it. Sometimes people avoid using old film and video because there is a drop in quality compared to the footage used today. With the music and the video matched together, this song created an unforgettable combination. I like to think it helps me today with brainstorming and creating visuals of stories that will impact my viewers and my clients’ viewers.

Johnny Cash and his wife (June Carter Cash) both passed away within serval months of shooting this music video, but we should be very thankful for this production and the Cash’s will to create this masterpiece for us while failing in health.

  • Gold Rush!!

I have been watching a show on the Discovery Channel called Gold Rush. Gold Rush is about six men risking everything for the chance to strike rich mining for gold in the wild Alaska. It’s great seeing people who are risking everything to provide for their families during this hard economic time. Discovery Channel has announced in their advertisements that gold prices are at an all time high. This adds to the risk and investment the crews/characters are embarking on and the need to be successful. After watching the first season where the miners failed, it was great to see they had high hopes for the next season. This reiterated for me the intensity other companies and individuals have when searching for new clients and work. Whether it’s part-time or full-time, we are competing everyday for our current jobs, future jobs and projects. Sometimes entertaining TV shows can remind us how fragile our jobs and contracts can be… keep fighting and pushing towards the impossible goal of perfection!

  • M83

Today I edited videos to the music of M83. This music video and song really motivated me (below). There is something about it that reminds me of being young and has this strange matrix feel to the music video. Still being young (at least in my mind), reminds me that we can make a change for good or bad. I also love that it has this creepy/melancholy feel. If you are lacking motivation, I highly recommend listening to a few M83 songs. Check out the music video below and M83.

  • Things I have received for free…

There are a few items that I have received or have bought at discount stores that I really enjoy! For example: coats, shirts, and gloves. I wear more free/discounted items than items I have bought myself and at times even more than items my wife has given me. For some reason these items have more character that I like. My wife hates the fact that I wear a sweater I received for free compared to the hundreds of dollars worth of sweaters and coats I have in the closet. Today I was thinking about these items having no material value. I have one particular green sweatshirt that I wear ever year starting around October to March, its comfortable, warm and cozy. The loafers I wear all winter smell worst than a farm and have holes in them. During the winter season while I’m wearing these two worn out items, I tend to forget about another gift I have received. You might know where I am going with this… either way please read the following..

For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. [Romans 6:23]

    Happy Holidays, Daniel
